Ardyce Madonna Weigel Petersen, of Ames and formerly of Estherville, died on the morning of her 89th birthday, May 11, 2012. She was born in 1923 in rural Boone County; the daughter of Max and Callie Knight Weigel and the youngest of eight children. Ardyce graduated from Story City High School in 1941. On Sept. 21, 1943, she married Hans Petersen at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames, after a four-month courtship. Ardyce was a homemaker whose greatest accomplishments in life were raising her children and caring for her husband. She assisted with working on the farm in Kossuth County, Iowa, raised huge gardens and canned the bounties of them, and sewed clothes for her children. She loved to dance, ride motorcycles with Hans and travel. Ardyce taught ceramics for 49 years and sold Avon products for 10 years. Ardyce is remembered as cooking and baking wonderful meals, especially lasagna. She and Hans retired from farming in 1975 and moved to Estherville. They relocated one last time to Ames in 2003.

Ardyce died on Friday morning at Rolling Green Village in Nevada, with her husband by her side, of natural causes. Ardyce is survived by her husband of 68 years, Hans, of Ames; children Treva Petersen, Dale (Suzanne) Petersen, Rosalie Petersen and Nina Barroso, all of Ames and Paul (Sharon) Petersen of Estherville; daughter-in-law, Nancy Petersen of Estherville, 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 42 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by all her siblings, two sons, Daniel in 2008 and Mark in 1979 and two infant great-grandsons, Sebastian and Keaton Dietrich.

A memorial mass will be said on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames where the family will greet friends for an hour prior to the mass. The Rosary will be said at the church on Tuesday evening at 6:45 p.m. with a vigil to follow. As a show of sympathy, memorial contributions should be directed to the family.
