Past Gruver Woman Dies
Mrs. David Applebaum, 65, of Akron, Ohio, the former Verna Wickens of near Gruver, died yesterday at a hospital in Akron, her death attributed to cancer.

Mrs. Applebaum is survived by her husband; one brother, Lester Wickens of Dike; and two sisters, Mrs. Harvey (Irene) Solmonson of Estherville and Mrs. Russelll (Lucile) Meewes of Dike.

Funeral services are to be Tuesday in Akron. Burial will be later in Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 31, 1966)

Mrs. Applebaum Services Planned for Saturday
Mrs. Verna Applebaum, a former resident of Gruver, will be brought here for burial Saturday. Mrs. Applebaum died at Akron, Ohio, on Dec. 30, 1966. A chapel service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Reese-Henry Funeral Home and interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation hours are between 7 and 9 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Applebaum was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Wickens, formerly of Gruver. She attended school in Estherville. She was born a Sheraton, Ill., Jan. 15, 1901, and came to Gruver with her parents as a young girl.

She attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught school at the John Hanson School near Gruver, and at the Emmet Consolidated School.

She was married May 6, 1933, to David Applebaum at New Cumberland, W. Va., and lived in Akron for 30 years.

Surviving are her husband; two sisters, Mrs. Harvey Solmonson of Estherville, and Mrs. Russell Meewes of Dike; and one brother, Lester Wickens of Dike. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
