C.S. Anderson Dies; Veteran Merchant Here
Funeral Service to Be Held Wednesday
C.S. Anderson, 63, member of the furniture and undertaking firm of Mahlum and Anderson, died yesterday morning at the Colonial hospital in Rochester, Minn., where he had been a patient for the past month.

Mr. Anderson had a severe attack of stomach flu last April which was followed by a jaundice condition that became acute a month ago. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson went to the Mayo clinic where he was placed under observation and treatment. He seemed to be making a slow but steady response to treatment and neither he nor his wife considered his condition to be critical.

Death Unexpected
Mrs. Anderson was called to his bedside early Sunday morning because of his uneasiness, but even then was not prepared for the sudden death which came at 10:30 a.m., caused by a closed gall duct which resulted in gas pressure on his heart.

Charles Sigfried Anderson, son of Charles and Amelia Anderson, was born in 1880 in Sweden. He came to America with his parents and older sister when he was a year old. The family first lived at Aurora, Ill., then moved to Madrid, where Mr. Anderson attended the public schools.

In Madrid he lived across the street from a man by the name of Sunberg who had a furniture and undertaking business. Mr. Anderson swept out the store and ran errands for Mr. Sunberg and developed an early interest in the business. Later he went to Des Moines and took a course of training to be a licensed mortician. After completing his training he worked in a Jefferson furniture and undertaking business.

Came Here in 1901
In 1901, Mr. Anderson came to Estherville and worked for Bert Barber in a furniture and undertaking store. He had worked for Mr. Barber five years, when Henry Mahlum bought the Barber establishment. Mr. Anderson continued to work for Mr. Mahlum until 1908, when he purchased an interest in the firm, which became Mahlum and Anderson. This partnership has continued during the past 35 years.

He was married in 1906 [1908] to Miss Maude Carmody at Florence, Colo. They established their home in Estherville, where they have lived ever since.

Trustee of Church
Mr. Anderson had been a member of the First Presbyterian church since July 12, 1914, when he joined t the same time Mrs. Anderson did. He had been a member of the board of trustees of the church for 12 years. The trustees will act as honorary pallbearers at the funeral.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Elks and K of P lodges. He also was active in the Chamber of Commerce, having served as director of the board of the Chamber of Commerce a number of times.

Funeral Wednesday
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the First Presbyterian church. The Rev. J.M. Kennedy will be in charge of the service and will be assisted by the Rev. Gilbert Voorhies of Marion.

Business men of the city and the board members of the Chamber of Commerce will attend the funeral in a group. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 15, 1943)
