4 Killed in Crash Near Sherburn
Cars With Iowa, Washington Couples Collide
Mishap brings State Fatalities to 413 for Year

Four persons – two couples visiting Minnesota – were killed Thursday night when their cars collided at the intersection of U.S. 16 and a Martin County road near Sherburn, 15 miles west of Fairmont.

The crash carried the state traffic toll for the year to 413 as compared with 417 a year ago.

Victims were David Nelson, 29, and his 28-year-old wife of Tacoma, Wash., and Garven Amdahl, 22, and his wife, Peggy [Margaret Ann Waery], 21, Estherville, Iowa. Amdahl, a medical student at University of Iowa, was the son of Emmett Amdahl, assistant sales manager of an Estherville milling firm. The dead couple had left their 4-month-old daughter with relatives there.

Norman Bartlett of Sherburn, an eye-witness, said the two cars jumped into the air amid clouds of dust and steam after the collision. Nelson and Mrs. Amdahl died at the scene, the two others later in Tri-Mont Hospital. (The Winona Daily News, Winona, MN, September 10, 1954)
