Walter Thiel Dies Friday; Rites Monday
Walter G. [Gustav] Thiel, 78, of rural Estherville died suddenly Friday, July 28, 1972.Services were held at 2 p.m. today at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, south of Gruver. The Rev. Lauritz Mork officiated and “Old Rugged Cross” was sung by Eldon Aanonson, John Birkland, Edgar Iverson and Clare Skattebo, accompanied by Mrs. Ralph Johnson at the organ. Interment was made at High Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers were August Andresen, Sylvester Berge, Arnold Hoganson, Bernard Isakson, Leonard Ness and Mike Pattison. Fuhrman Funeral Home of Estherville was in charge of arrangements.
Son of Henry and Christina Thiel, Walter was born June 30, 1894, in Germany. He came to the United States with his family at the age of one year and they settled in Tama County. He received his education in Tama County schools and later moved to the Armstrong area.
On Feb. 6, 1924, he was united in marriage to Luella Dahle at Wallingford. The couple farmed in the Estherville area, retiring in 1950. Mr. Thiel was a longtime member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Luella; two sons, Kenneth and Raymond, both of rural Estherville; nine grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, two sisters, Mrs. Hugh (Tracey) Taylor of Milford and Mrs. Frank (Anna) Neilson of Ringsted; two brothers, Alfred Thiel of Armstrong and Henry Thiel of Graettinger. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Fred and Clarence. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 31, 1972)
