Vergie Hempstead
Estherville – Funeral services for Vergie A. Hempstead, 93, of Tacoma, Wash. will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 16 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Chapel in Estherville with Gregg Waylander officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery in Estherville. She died on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004 at Manor Care Nursing Home in Tacoma.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 15 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Chapel in Estherville.

Vergie was born on Aug. 25, 1910 in Dunnell, Minn., the daughter of Harry and Pearl (Sherman) Talledge. She received her education in District 65 Country School and graduated from Ceylon, Minn. High School.

On Sept. 10, 1929, Vergie was united in marriage to Victor Hempstead in Fairmont, Minn. Vergie was active in the Gold Star Mothers sewing club for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tacoma. She was also very active in her craft clubs.

She belonged to the VFW Auxiliary; was a member of the Baptist Church and also was a member of the Gold Star Mothers of Emmet County.

Vergie is survived by four children, Virgil Hempstead and his wife, Lorabelle of Estherville; Verlene Stewart of Frenchtown, Mont.; Velmer Hempstead and his wife, Norma of Tacoma; Vergene Munson and her husband, Dale of Dodge City, Kan.; daughter-in-law, Beverly Hempstead of Omaha, Neb.; eleven grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Vivian Lidke of Fairmont.

She has been preceded in death by her husband; three sons, Victor Jr.; Veder Dee, Vern; two grandsons; two granddaughters; her parents; two sisters and four brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 13, 2004)
