Former Variety Store Operator Here Dies
John Smith who operated a variety store here many years and was a former Estherville city clerk, died yesterday in a rest home at Chula Vista, Calif., according to a long distance telephone call received here by Mrs. Vera Smith from her daughter, Mrs. Merton G. Ankrum of Lakeside, Calif.

Mr. Smith is survived by a daughter, Gretchen, of New York City. He was preceded in death by another daughter, Margaret, and his wife. He had lived in California for more than 20 years.

Funeral services are pending at Rogers Mortuary, San Diego, pending arrival of his daughter. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 10, 1963)
