Iowa City – Services for Evelyn Oakes, 86, of Iowa City, formerly of Ringsted, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Ringsted with the Rev. John Werth officiating. Interment will be in High Lake Cemetery, rural Wallingford. She died Tuesday, April 1, 1997 at University Hospital at Iowa City.Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Ringsted.
She was born April 10, 1910 at Ringsted the daughter of C.E. and Gertie (Nelson) Christiansen. She attended Ringsted Schools, graduating in 1928. She then attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids and Iowa State College at Ames majoring in Home Economics and Elementary Education. She earned teaching certificate and taught in a one room school south of Ringsted. In August of 1932 she married Joe Oakes. The couple farmed in Jack Creek Twp. until 1975 when they moved into Ringsted. She moved to Iowa City in 1995 and lived at Walden Place.
She was a 60-year member of the C.C.C. Club of Jack Creek Twp. and a long-time Federated Women’s Club member and was a national delegate in 1936. She was an 80-year member of First Presbyterian Church in Ringsted where she served as an Elder, choir member and long-time Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include a son Dean of Iowa City, grandchildren: Sally Edman, Decorah; Perry Oakes, Changuinola, Panama; Rita Kenyon, Greensboro, N.C.; and Scott Oakes, Warrenville, Ill.; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers: Cecil Christiansen, Ringsted and Dale Christiansen, Audubon.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two great-grandchildren; parents and one sister. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 3, 1997)
