Former County Resident Dies
Services were held Monday, Feb. 13 for Gus Merklin, former area resident who died last week at the Ellsworth Hospital in Iowa Falls, at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Anderson’s Home for Funerals, the Rev. H.V. Bartz officiating.

Interment was in the Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.

Merklin was born Aug. 1, 1883, at Troy, Ill., son of Nicholas and Elizabeth Merklin. As a small boy he moved to a farm in Emmet County with his family. Later he worked as a mason and blacksmith in Wallingford.

Merklin moved to Iowa [Falls] in 1919 and built the blacksmith shop which he operated until his retirement 12 years ago.

In 1905 he married Ida Grodland at Wallingford. Mrs. Merlin died in 1921 and on Nov. 30, 1922, he was married to Mabel Crippen at Eldora.

He is survived by his widow, two sons, Leonard of Ft. Dodge and Mervyn of Mobile, Ala., a daughter, Mrs. Donald Reynolds of Alden, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Charles Heidecker and Mrs. Lena Berndorfner, both of Los Angeles, Calif.

Merklin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ida, a sister and two brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 16, 1961)
