Wallingford – Services for Sylvester Berge, 93, of Wallingford, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Gruver, with Pastor H. Allen Vik presiding. Interment will be in High Lake Cemetery at Wallingford. He died Monday, April 15, 1996 at Rosewood Manor, Estherville.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
He was born Dec. 30, 1902 at Wallingford, the son of Lewis and Berthina (Edwinson) Berge. He attended Violet Dale rural school and graduated from Waldorf College in 1923 with a degree in business. On Aug. 22, 1928 he married Alvina Iverson who died in 1951. On Dec. 28, 1963 he married Olga Christian. He farmed in the Gruver and Wallingford area until 1946 when he semi-retired. He founded Ingham Lake Bible Camp in 1951, managing it for 14 years. He was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church where he had held most offices as well as being a lay advisor to the Iowa District. He was a member of National Bible Camp Board for years; charter member of Emmet County Conservation Board, chairman 27 years.
Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Virgil (Viola) West, Wallingford and Mrs. H. Allen (Janice) Vik, Beresford, S.D.; stepchildren: Mrs. Rolland (Delores) Fox, Titonka; Mrs. Donald (Arlene) Hockett, Estherville; Loren Christian, Rockville, Md.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren and 17 step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Malvina Kronstad, Aitken, Minn.
He was preceded in death by both wives; parents; brother and two sisters. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 15, 1996)
