Knut T. Sandven
Knut T. Sandven, born August 8, 1840, in Sandven, Hardanger, Norway, immigrated to this country in 1866 and came to Winneshiek county, Decorah, Iowa. Was united in marriage to Miss Lena Johanesen Sept. 1878.To this union were born four children, three boys and one girl. Shortly after his marriage he and his wife moved to Dickinson county, Iowa, where Mr. Sandven previous to his marriage had taken up homestead, here the two oldest children were born. After a few years he bought a farm in Emmet county, between Estherville and Wallingford. His wife, Lena Sandven, died in the year 1881 and was laid to rest in the cemetery at Wallingford. In 1884 he moved back to Winneshiek county, Ridgeway, Iowa, where he has lived until his death. He was married the second time in 1889 to Sigrid Anderson. Seven years ago he had a stroke of paralysis, that left him almost helpless and since has been tied to his chair. His wife and his daughter, Caroline and son Adolph and wife, stayed with him and took care of him until the death occurred Nov. 21, 1922. Those to mourn the loss of a dear husband, father and grandfather are Mrs. Sigrid Sanven of Ridgeway, and sons Johan Theodore of Estherville, Adolph Sandven of Ridgeway and daughter Caroline also of Ridgeway, and grandson Norman Sandven of Estherville. Albert Sandven, the youngest of the boys, died some years ago. His sister, Mrs. Sven Severson Maage, who lives in Wallingford, is the only survivor of Mr. Knut E. Sandven’s family.Funeral services were held at Ridgeway, Iowa, conducted by Ref. -- Jordahl of that place, who has been the pastor of the Sandven’s for many years, after which the body was shipped to Wallingford. Those who accompanied were the son Adolph and wife and his daughter, Caroline Sandven.
Funeral services were held at the Wallingford Lutheran church, Saturday, Nov. 25, conducted by Rev. T. Hansen, assisted by Prof. S. Strand. The choir sang a few beautiful and appropriate numbers. Pallbearers were James Refsell, O.O. Refsell, Halvor Egertson, T.O. Sando and L.L. Gunderson.
Knut Sandven was a kind and quiet person who lived in peace and love with all whom he came in contact and met both sorrow and happiness with loyal devotion. We hope and pray that he also was loyal and resigned his soul and all to his God and Saviour, Jesus Christ. May the good Saviour have taken him home to his mansion forever to be with Him and those that have gone before. May God bless the children, wife and sister who are still here, to be faithful to their God and Saviour until the great reunion shall come to pass in the heavenly home. – Pastor (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, November 29, 1922)
