Ward Smith
Estherville – Services for Ward E. Smith, 71, of rural Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 3 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Thomas Topf officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. Legion of Mary will be at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, January 2nd and Parish Vigil Service will be at 7:30 p.m. the same day at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home. He died Tuesday, December 31 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.Friends may call at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday.
He was born December 22, 1920 in rural Estherville, the son of Edward and Julia (Flaherty) Smith. Educated in rural Estherville schools, he married Lavon “Bonnie” Johnson on May 15, 1947 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville. He lived and farmed all his life in Twelve Mile township. He also operated a cow-calf operation. He was a 4-H leader for many years and was an honorary 4-H member. He served as a board member of Emmet County Cattleman’s Association and Wallingford Elevator. He belonged to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Estherville VFW and Wallingford American Legion Posts. He was a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, son Dennis Smith and wife Holle, Estherville; daughter Janet Lown and husband Don, Waukesha, Wisc.; son Ronald Smith, Dolliver; son Paul Smith and wife Janet, Estherville; Gary Smith and wife Lori, Estherville. Other survivors include sister Alvena Phillips, Estherville; sister Mrs. Urban (Irene) Pluth, Estherville; brother Orville Smith, Las Cruces, N.M.; and 12 grandchildren: Brand and Jennifer Smith; Alison and Ryan Lown; Brett and Shane Smith; and Paige, Derek and Kyle Smith.
