Well-Known Maple Hill Merchant Dies

Curtis (Curt) Larson, 63, well known and esteemed postmaster and merchant at Maple Hill, died yesterday at 5:50 p.m. at Holy Family Hospital. Mr. Larson became ill shortly after working the 5 p.m. mail. His physician, summoned to the Larson home, took him at once to the hospital, arriving there at 5:15 p.m. Cause of death was determined as a heart attack.

Mr. Larson was a native of Emmet County, born Dec. 2, 1895 at Wallingford, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chris Larson, pioneer residents of the Wallingford area.

As a boy he attended the Wallingford schools, later attending high school at Turtle Lake, Minn., and business college in St. Paul, Minn.

In 1917 he enlisted in the United States Army and served near the Mexican border before a six months tour of duty in France. She received his discharge in 1919.

Upon release from service Mr. Larson returned to Wallingford and was associated with his father in a Wallingford general store.

He was married Sept. 19, 1923 to Blanche Nelson of Wallingford at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.L. Nelson.

In 1927 Mr. Larson purchased the store at Maple Hill and in August of that year was appointed as postmaster of Maple Hill. He had served in that capacity continuously since that time.

He was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church, the Wallingford American Legion Pot of which he was a past commander, was presently serving as treasurer of the Maple Hill school board, a post he had held for many years; and served for six years on the Emmet County Selective Service Board during World War II.

Mr. Larson is survived by his widow; one daughter, Mrs. Virgil (Betty) Westercamp of Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren, Barbara and Janine Westercamp; two brothers, Dr. Leonard Larson of Spencer, Arthur Larson of St. Paul, Minn.; and two sisters, Mrs. O.J. (Stella) Nelson of Spragueville, and Mrs. Clifford (Gladys) Hemmingson, Rapid City, S.D.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, his parents, one sister and one brother.

Funeral services are pending the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Westercamp who are scheduled to reach Maple Hill early this afternoon. Time and place of the services will be published in tomorrow’s Daily News. Sandin-Furhamn’s Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 10, 1959)

Rites for Curtis Larson Will Be Held Thursday
Funeral services for Curtis Larson, Maple hill merchant and postmaster, who died suddenly Monday afternoon, are to be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Estherville Lutheran Church, the Rev. Theodore Maakestad officiating. Interment is to be in Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion members.

Active pallbearers are to be Howard Mitchell, Doyle Wagner, George McKean, S.T. Dybdahl, Harold Reed and Verle Mathieson of Everly.

Honorary pallbearers are Delbert Beauman, Otto Grimm, Bill Christensen of Arnolds Park, Robert Knight, Ed Maniece and Clarence Mathieson.

Friends may call at the Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home until noon Thursday when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of the services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 11, 1959)
