Rites Today for John L. Johnson at Wallingford
John L. Johnson, 87, well known retired well driller and pump man of the Graettinger and Wallingford area, died Monday [December 6, 1965] at 11:50 p.m. at the Good Samaritan home in Estherville. He had been in ill health the past three months. Death was attributed to pneumonia and complications of advanced age.

Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) morning at 10:30 at Wallingford Lutheran church with the Rev. Robert E. Glaser officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery at Wallingford. The Fuhrman Funeral home of Graettinger is in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be LeRoy Oddson, Clarence Thu, Glenden Thu, Willard Larson, Maxwell Jamison and Ervin Wikert.

John L. Johnson was born May 21, 1878, in High Lake township, the son of the late Lewis L. and Carrie Johnson. He received his education in the High Lake township schools. On August 30, 1916 he married Gertrude Nelson at Graettinger. They farmed near Storden, Minn. and in the Wallingford and Graettinger area. In 1921 he started the business of repairing pumps and drilling wells and continued in this work until retirement in 1953. For many years Mr. and Mrs. Johnson lived on a farm north of Graettinger. Mrs. Johnson died Sept. 11, 1964. He was a member of the Wallingford Lutheran church.

Immediate survivors include one sister, Mrs. Louisa Oddson of Graettinger and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother, Pete Johnson and three sisters, Mrs. Andrew (Gertrude) Iverson, Mrs. Ludvig (Beatrice) Larson and Mr. Mathias (Martha) Simonson. (Graettinger Times, Graettinger, IA, December 9, 1965)
