Rites Held for Charles Jurries
Funeral services were held at the Bethany Lutheran church here Thursday afternoon for Charles Herman Jurries, 68, a resident of this community for the past 13 years, who died at his home Sunday evening, Feb. 18, following a heart attack. Final rites were conducted by the Rev. C.H. Johnson, pastor.Burial was in the Norwegian Lutheran [now Wallingford Lutheran] cemetery at Wallingford with the Martin Funeral home in charge of the arrangements. Pallbearers were Lloyd Enger, Lawrence Gravlund, Pete Peters, Robert McDonald, Fred Kinnetz and C.W. Petticord.
Born in Greengarden, Ill. on Dec. 12, 1882, Mr. Jurries was the son of Mr. and Mrs. August Jurries. He grew up in that vicinity and on April 15, 1914 married Miss Louise Topp at Joliet, Ill.
The couple later moved to a farm near Estherville where they lived until 1939 at which time they moved to a farm southwest of Emmetsburg. Mr. Jurries retired from the farm in 1941. He and his wife have been living in a home in the south part of town for some time.
The Jurries had 12 children, all of whom are living. All, with the exception of one son, Floyd, were able to be home for the last rites. Other children are Mrs. Virgil Fry, Mrs. Leon Fry, Lester Jurries, Wilbur Jurries, Charles Jurries, Jr., Mavis Jurries, Stanley Jurries, Emmetsburg; Lewis Jurries, Castle Rock, Minn.; Mrs. John West, Waterford, Minn.; Mrs. John Hirth, Ruthven; and Pfc. Melvin Jurries, Camp Atterbury, Ind.
Last fall Mr. Jurries suffered a heart attack. He recovered sufficiently to be able to resume some of his activities. Sunday evening, Feb. 18, he had another attack and Mrs. Jurries immediately summoned a physician and members of the family. A short time later Mr. Jurries was stricken with another attack, the end coming shortly before midnight. His death will be regretted by many in this vicinity for he made a large number of friends since moving to Emmetsburg.
Surviving besides his wife and children are four sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Iver Brandt, Mrs. Sophie Madus, Mrs. Tony Wink, Mrs. Bill Mattson, Fred and Henry Jurries. Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. He also leaves several grandchildren. (Emmetsburg Reporter, Emmetsburg, IA, February 27, 1951)
