Estherville – Services for Vernon Brown, 79, of rural Estherville will be held Monday, March 13th at 1:30 p.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gruver with Pastors William Runaas and Harold Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Estherville’s East Side Cemetery. Mr. Brown died Friday, March 10, 1989, at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.Vernon Theodore Brown was born August 28, 1909 in Gruver to James L. and Margaret (Larson) Brown. He received his education in the Gruver schools and Estherville Junior College. On October 20, 1929 he married the former Sylvia Bernice Hiles at Armstrong. Following their marriage the couple lived in Janesville, Wisc. where Vernon was employed by General Motors for two years. In the spring of 1931 the couple returned to Iowa and lived and farmed on the same farm four miles south of Gruver. Vernon retired in 1972 and was a resident of Rosewood Manor Nursing Home since August of 1988. He was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church of rural Gruver, served six years on the Wallingford Elevator Board, was a High Lake Township Trustee for twenty years, was a director of High Lake Violet Dale School Number Two, was president of his church Mission Society, was church treasurer and on its building committee.
Survivors include his wife Bernice of Estherville; four sons: Dr. Bob Brown of Oelwein, Dr. Duane Brown of Valley City, N.D., Dr. Allen Brown of Delta, Colo. and Dr. Keith Brown of Adrian, Mich.; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and five brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 13, 1989)
