Funeral services will be held Friday from the Riverside church. Her brothers, F.T. Gilbert of Norfolk, Neb., and Rudolph who is attending college at Grinnell, and her sister Mrs. E.G. Franklin and husband of Iowa Falls are here to attend the funeral. A complete obituary will be published next week. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, January 9, 1929)

Obituary of Edith Luella Gilbert
Edith Luella Gilbert was born September 9th, 1903, at Wallingford, Iowa. She was baptized as infant by Rev. G.O. Paulsrud of Randall, Iowa, who then served the former Nathanel congregation. She was also confirmed by Rev. Paulsrud. After finishing the high school of Estherville and graduating from this institution in 1923. After graduation she taught school for two years. One year in High Lake Township and one year in Wallingford. About four years this coming spring Luella was taken sick with tonsil trouble and this again brought upon her the disease of T.B. of the lungs. Physicians were sought and all was done that she may recover her health. She went to Oakdale sanitarium for awhile and seemingly she began to regain her strength. Luella surely fought bravely to recover. She had everything that life can give to a young person to live for but God willed it otherwise. On the 8th day of January, at 9 P.M. she passed peacefully to the Great Beyond. Those to mourn the loss of a dear daughter, sister, sweetheart and niece are: Parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Gilbert; brothers Fritjof Gilbert of Norfolk, Neb.; Rudolph Gilbert of Grinnell college, Grinnell, Ia.; Mrs. Alma Franklin of Iowa Falls; Mrs. Sam Natterstad , Odena Gilbert and Margaret Gilbert all of Wallingford; her sweetheart, Mr. Arthur Janson and aunts, Miss Randina Sando, Beatta Sando; uncles, Erick and Herman Sando, all four of Minneapolis.

Funeral services were held both from the Gilbert home and from the Wallingford Lutheran church. Chas. Anderson, funeral director; pall-bearers, Fritjof Gilbert, Rudolph gilbert, M.A. Franklin, Arthur Jensen, Sam Natterstad, Chas. Nourse. Rev. T. Hansen, former pastor of the congregation, assisted by Rev. A.O. Gaard of Cylinder, Iowa, conducted the funeral services. The school children of Lena Gunderson’s class sang a beautiful song at the home. At the church a quartet consisting of Silas Lundy, Clarence Egeland, Amos Egeland and Martin Natterstad sang several beautiful numbers and a duet by Clarence Egeland and Silas Lundy. Rev. A. Gaard and Lawrence Sunde of Estherville, Iowa, each sang a solo. A great host of relatives and friends had met up to pay their last respect to their dear friend. The casket was laden with floral wreaths and bouquets. The text used by Rev. Hansen was the word of God spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah: “Her sun has gone down while yet it is day.” This text surely was fitting for this young life which was cut off at the very midday but the good Lord who does the transplanting will surely make that life that ceases so soon here to continue to shine and grow in the Heavenly glory Beyond. May God bless the sorrowing Gilbert family and Arthur Jensen, her sweetheart, may he fill their life with that blessing which he alone is able to give. My we pray that when our life sun comes to a setting, we shall meet Luella again where there is no sickness or sorrow to mar the life but where we shall live that complete life in Glory for evermore. – T. Hansen (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, January 16, 1929)
