Serious Shooting Accident
Report reached here last night of the accidental shooting of H.G. Gilbertson [Culbranson], near High Lake station. Drs. Ballard and Little were summoned and found the man in a precarious condition. He was returning home from a duck hunt about 8 o’clock last night, carrying his gun loaded in a buggy. In going over a rough piece of road the gun was discharged, the full load striking him diagonally across the right breast toward the right shoulder, tearing a wound about two inches wide by six inches in length, laying bare the lung and entering the upper biceps muscle on the right arm. The unfortunate man was alive at day-break this morning but cannot recover. Gilbertson has kept a small store at High Lake for some time. He is a married man and about 30 years of age. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, August 22, 1889)A sad accident occurred Wednesday evening in which Hans Gilbertson of High Lake was probably fatally shot by the accidental discharge of a gun while he was hunting.. The discharge passed into the right breast destroying part of a rib, exposing and perforating a part of the lung and passing through the arm below the axilla, destroying a greater part of the muscle in that region. Drs. Ballard and Little were summoned to attend the wounded man but report little hopes of his recovery. He was a married man, 30 years of age, and for some time has kept a small store in High Lake. The funeral rites of G.N. Gilbertson were held Saturday afternoon from the Lutheran church at High lake, Rev. Engh officiating. A large concourse of friends were in attendance. Mr. Gilbertson by his upright dealings, generous and accommodating spirit had won the esteem of all who knew him and regret at his untimely death was universal. The bereaved widow has the sympathy of the entire community. (Emmet County Republican, Estherville, IA, August 29, 1889)
As was expected, Hans Gilbertson did not long survive the unfortunate accident which we recorded last week. Some of the shot was found to have penetrated the right lung, and of course internal bleeding ensued, which soon resulted in death. He leaves a young wife and two children.
