Estherville – Wallace Theodore Berg, 85, died Monday, July 13, 1987 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn. He was born Dec. 9, 1901 in Emmet County, the son of Lewis and Helen (Johnson) Berg. He attended the Berg Country School located just north of his parents’ home. He later attended Estherville High School. He worked for the W.A. Beymer Clothing Store and Gildner’s Men’s Wear; later as a traveling representative for Shell Oil Co. He owned a furniture store on Central Ave. and later was in partnership with Charles Bassett in a furniture store now occupied by Emmet county State Bank.

Berg retired in 1964 after serving as manager of the State Liquor Store 14 years. He was the last of the original founders of First Federal Savings and Loan Assoc., where he served as president and chairman of the board until he resigned in 1975.

On Dec. 27, 1939 Berg was united in marriage with Nina Marie Platt in Blair, Neb. She died Jan. 15, 1974.

He is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Joe (Nina) Rockis, Medford, Ore. and Mrs. George (Ruth) Hackett, Estherville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents; two brothers and one sister.

At his request, his body was donated to the Mayo Foundation Rochester. Following their studies, his remains will be cremated and interred in the Wallingford Cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 15, 1987)
