Joseph Anderson
Joseph Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Anderson, was born the 13th of November, 1902, in High Lake township, Emmet county. He was a child brought into the fellowship of the Christian church by Holy Baptism and administered by Rev. Paulsrud, then pastor of the Lutheran church of Wallingford. At the age of 14 he moved with his parents to Estherville where he was enrolled as a pupil in the public schools as well as in the confirmation class at the Estherville Lutheran Church. When the United States entered the war he was eager to espouse the cause of his country but his tender age kept him out of the army. In 1919 he enlisted in the Marines. After completing his term of enlistment he was honorably discharged from the Navy. During this period of service he suffered severe complications of a cold which left him in a weakened condition. He spent some time in the west then returned home and was later admitted as a patient at Oakdale Sanitarium. From there he was transferred to a U.S. Veterans hospital at Ft. Pyns [Lyon], Colo., where he was for nearly two years. He was quite poorly some months ago but rallied somewhat. Last Wednesday word was received that he was very low. His sister, Myrtle, hastened to his bedside and arrived in time to be with him a short time before he passed away. He was able to tell her that he was prepared to go when his summons should come. He leaves to mourn his departure his parents, brothers, George and Alfred and sister Myrtle of Estherville, and half brothers and sisters, Andrew N. of Winnebago Co., Minn; Ivar of Cedar Rapids; Henry of Cedar Falls; Ole, Julius and Mrs. Martha Thompson of Wallingford; Mrs. Anna Sevold of Story City and Bert Anderson of Graettinger. Two young children, James Frederick and Mary Jo, have because of his home on account of his illness been adopted into good private homes out in California.
Funeral was held Wednesday at 1:30 in the home and two o’clock at the Estherville Lutheran church by Rev. L.A. Mathre assisted by Rev. T. Hanson of Wallingford. Interment being made in the family plot at the Wallingford cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, July 20, 1927)
