John Andrew Aanonson
John Andrew Aanonson was born in Center township, Emmet county, Iowa, August 14, 1868, his parents being the pioneer settlers, Mr. and Mrs. Lars Aanonson. He was as a child received into membership of the Norwegian Lutheran church through Holy Baptism. He was confirmed December 5, 1886, by Rev. J.M. Dahl. He stayed home with his parents on the farm until he was united in marriage to Dora Leikvold February 24, 1891. They first lived in Estherville for two years after which they moved to the farm in High Lake township where they resided until 1920 when they retired and moved back to Estherville. Their union was blessed with three sons.Mr. Aanonson had not been in robust health since he had the influenza nine years ago. Two weeks ago he was taken down with a threatened attack of pneumonia. This was however warded off, and he was able to be up again but in a few days became ill with pleurisy but even then his condition did not seem serious. Wednesday evening he ate a good supper and felt much better. About 3:15 Thursday morning he suffered a severe relapse and in three quarters of an hour he breathed his last. He was conscious to the end and said he was ready to go. He asked God’s blessings upon his dear ones and said, “I’m done, I’m going home.” Then he asked them to pray the Lord’s prayer with him and so with faith in his savior and a prayer up to his Heavenly Father he passed out of this life. While on the farm Mr. and Mrs. Aanonson were members of the Wallingford Lutheran church, and since they moved to town they have been active and honored members of the Estherville Lutheran church. In his death the community has lost a good citizen, a respected neighbor and esteemed friend and his family a living and devoted husband, father and brother. He is survived by his wife and sons, Lewis of High Lake township; Hilmar, of Minneapolis, and Arthur of Estherville. Also by one brother of Rose Creek, Minn., and five sisters, Mrs. Sam Opheim, Bucyrus, N.D.; Mrs. John Pro, Estherville; Mrs. Ed Stall, Center township; Mrs. Halvor Bergeson, Wallingford and Jennie Aanonson, Chicago. Also three grandsons, Leland, Eldon and Glen, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Aanonson and one uncle, Ole Aanonson. The funeral was held Monday 12 o’clock at the home and 12:30 at the church in Estherville and two o’clock in the Wallingford churchi, interment being made at the Wallingford cemetery. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. L.A. Mathre assisted by Rev. T. Hanson of Wallingford. An unusually large gathering of friends and many beautiful flowers bore testimony to the high regard in which Mr. Aanonson was held by all who knew him.
