Estherville – Funeral services for Susie Egeland, 100, of Estherville, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 at the Estherville Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Ray Miller officiating. Interment will be held at the Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery in Wallingford. She died on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

Susie was born on May 29, 1903 in Osgood, the daughter of August and Elizabeth (Hoelzer) Herke. She received her education in country schools and graduated from Graettinger High School. Later she attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake and received her degree.

On Dec. 9, 1925, Susie was united in marriage to Clarence Egeland in Wallingford. The family lived in the Wallingford area for seventeen years. In 1945, they moved to Estherville.

Susie taught school for six years in a country school, one year in Wallingford, thirteen years in the Superior school and eleven years in Estherville for a combined career in teaching of thirty-one years. Clarence died in 1967.

Susie was a member of Estherville Lutheran Church in Estherville.

Left to cherish Susie’s memory are her children, Gene Egeland of Chariton; Evelyn Fitzgerald-Stinson and her husband, Roy of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; six grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carrie Miller of Springfield, Mo.

Preceding Susie in death were her husband; one grandson; daughter-in-law, Ginny Egeland; five sisters; and four brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 25, 2003)
