David Van Eps Meets Tragic Death in Lake
There was a sad accident at Fairmont that brought sorrow to the J.H. Cramer family in the city and to the parents of David VanEps in Fairmont.

David and his five year old brother were playing on the riprapping near the city plant in Fairmont. The warm water from the plant keeps a hole in the Lake George adjoining. In some manner David slipped on one of the rocks and fell into the water. He was clad in heavy winter clothing and overshoes and while he could swim the weight dragged him to the bottom.

His little brother ran home and got his parents. Mrs. VanEps, who was formerly Marie Cramer, dived into the water but could not locate the child. Her husband searched under the rocks. The fire company was called and it was 30 minutes before the body was recovered. The firemen worked for over an hour in vain to resuscitate the boy but in vain.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday. David is survived by his parents, a sister and a brother. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, March 4, 1948)
