Estherville – Funeral services for Melvin O. [Orlan] Tirevold, 73, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 29 at the United Methodist Church in Estherville with the Rev. Larry willey officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery, Estherville. He died on Saturday, November 25 at the Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
He was born on July 19, 1922 in Dolliver, the son of Louis and Ida (Larson) Tirevold. He attended school in Dolliver and graduated from Dolliver High School in 1941. Despite having osteomyelitis in his leg, he loved sports and played on the Dolliver baseball team that went to the state high school tournament in 1940. He was united in marriage to Irene Flaharty on June 12, 1949 at the United Methodist Church in Terril. He farmed many years and milked purebred Ayrshire cattle. He was a township committeeman and corn sealer when the family lived in Langdon. He also worked as a custodian at Holy Family Hospital and delivered appliances for Sears. He quit farming in 1968. The couple moved to Gruver in 1973 where he worked as a custodian for the Lincoln Central School till his disability forced his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of the State and Local Custodial Associates and served as president of the local association for many years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he served on the Administration Board, was active in United Methodist Men and was the head Funeral Usher in the church for many years.
He is survived by his wife of Estherville; twin daughters, Mrs. Terry (Mavis) King of Estherville; and Mrs. James (Marlys) Tribby of Estherville; one son, Arlen of Gruver; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Leslie Tirevold of Sheridan, Ill.; and one sister, Lillian Nichols of Whittemore.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, his parents, one sister and four brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 27, 1995)
