Estherville – Funeral services for Duane Syverson, 68, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 6 at the first Presbyterian Church in Estherville with the Rev. Mark Gabbard officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery in Estherville with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388, American Legion Post 91 and AMVETS Post 3391, all of Estherville. He died on Thursday, aug. 2, 2001 at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
Duane was born on Nov. 28, 1932 in Estherville, the son of Ernest and Rose (Zitterich) Syverson. He received his elementary education in the Butler School, in Twelve Mile Lake Township and then attended high school in Estherville. He graduated from Estherville High School in 1950.
After graduation, Duane served in the United States Army from May of 1953 through May of 1955. He was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas and White Sand, N.M., and was involved in the military’s guided missile program.
Following his discharge from military service, he returned to Estherville and on Aug. 31, 1956, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Weir in Estherville. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Estherville until 1974, when they moved to Duane’s home farm southwest of Estherville, which is now a century farm.
Duane was employed by Fagre Construction until 1974, when he began farming and continued his masonary work. He retired from farming in 1995 and continued his masonary work until his death. He enjoyed his two dogs, Lady and Cotton, old time music, dancing, visiting with friends and traveling.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as an elder. He was also a member of the American Legion and Elks Club of Estherville. He served as a member of the Emmet County Extension Council.
Duane is survived by his wife, Marilyn of Estherville; one son, Randy and his wife, Leanne of Milford; two daughters, Cheryl Houseman and her husband, Rick of Estherville and Brenda Powell and her husband, Kent of Winterset; six grandchildren, Morgan and Dalton Syverson, Ryan and Rochelle Houseman and Travis and Dakota Powell and one sister, Deanna Shonkwiler and her husband, Bill of Estherville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, aunts and uncles. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 3, 2001)
