Estherville – Funeral services for Ivan Swanson, 81, of Estherville will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tues., Nov. 25, 1997 at the Union Baptist Church in Estherville with Pastor Dan Swanson officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery, Estherville. He died on Sat., Nov. 22 at the Good Samaritan Home in Estherville.Visitation will be held from 4-9 p.m. today, Nov. 24 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
He was born on Oct. 17, 1916 in Laurens, the son of Otto and Josephine (Warner) Swanson. He graduated from Armstrong High School in 1934. On June 15, 1940, he was united in marriage to Nellie Salley in Forest City. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Bricelyn, Minn. until 1946 when the family moved to Estherville. He was employed by the Rock Island Railroad for 40 years as a section laborer. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Mrs. Swanson died on October 22, 1996. He had been a resident at the Good Samaritan Care Center since 1992.
He attended Union Baptist Church in Estherville and was a member of the Brotherhood Maintenance of Way Employee.
He is survived by his son, the Rev. Dan Swanson of Cokato, Minn.; daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Sally) Verbrugge of Armstrong; Mrs. Steve (Laura) Young of Estherville; ten grandchildren; sisters, Geneva Pedersen of Ringsted and Mrs. Don (Darlene) Swanson of Swea City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother and three sisters. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 24, 1997)
