Pocahontas – Services for Hattie Smith, 92, of Pocahontas, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Armstrong with the Rev. Dan Miller officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery, Estherville. She died Wed., Aug. 26, 1998, at Pocahontas Manor Care Center.Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until time of service at the United Methodist Church in Armstrong.
She was born March 19, 1906 at Armstrong, the daughter of Stanley and Harriet (Ormiston) Van DenBurgh. She attended Armstrong school graduating from High school in 1924. On Dec. 28, 1925 she married James E. Smith at Estherville.
Following their marriage the couple lived in Armstrong until 1939, when they moved to Estherville. In 1946 they moved to Ware and operated Smith’s Store. In 1970 she moved to Armstrong and lived there until 1972, at which time she moved to the Pocahontas Manor Care Center. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Armstrong; UMW; and was a Gold Star Mother.
Survivors include sons: Byrl of Hardy, Ark.; Duane of Waterloo and daughters: Marlys of Everly, Marlene Thurman, Waverly and Janet Heald, Cedar Rapids; ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband April 18, 1960; one son; one great-grandson; one sister; three brothers and parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 26, 1998)
