Mrs. Wm. Simpson Passes After a Long Illness
Mrs. William Simpson [Selena Toms Simpson], 72, a resident of this community for 24 years died at the farm home of her son John at 11 a.m. Saturday [July 9, 1938]. Mrs. Simpson had been ill for more than a year and death was caused by complications. She had spent the winter in Florida and was called back by the sudden death of her son George last spring. Mr. Simpson died in March, 1935 and since that time his widow had spent much time at the home of her children, Francis and John of Estherville and Mrs. Edna Carlson, Des Moines and with George and his family.Mrs. Simpson was born in England and came to American in 1892. She lived first in Florida, then in Illinois, where she was married. The family came to this vicinity in 1914.
Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon. There was a short prayer service at the John Simpson home at 2 pm. followed by the service proper at 2:30 at Grace Episcopal church in charge of Rev. La Vere Snelmandine. Musical numbers were rendered by Mrs. John Greig and Mrs. J.E Stockdale with Mrs. Robinson at the organ. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery.
Mrs. Simpson was known by her friends as a quiet, capable woman; devoted to her family and church. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, July 12, 1938)
