Early Settler Dies in Calif.
M.J. Mattson Came Here in 1868
News was received at Estherville last Wednesday of the death of Melvin J. Mattson at Los Angeles, Calif., Thursday, Feb. 9, after an illness of considerable duration. He was born in Belvedere, Ill., and when three years of age his parents removed to Wisconsin and settled near Melrose in a valley afterward named Mattson Valley in honor of his father.

His earlier years were spent in that state and in the fall of 1868 he came to Emmet County, Iowa, where the father purchased land in Ellsworth township, and where the family continued to live until the grasshopper plague in the early seventies forced retirement.

The deceased was born in December, 1851 and spent many years of his life in Emmet county where he taught school and engaged in different forms of employment. He was engaged in farming in Floyd county a few years and during that time was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Hawk who died a short time ago.

Those left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father are Vernon, Raymond, Helen Mattson, Lewis Berton, Bernice Claude and Fred. Mr. Mattson was a most likeable and whole souled Christian in many ways. Besides his children he leaves to mourn his taking, one brother, Simo of Olate, Colo., and a sister, Mrs. Charles W. Dillman, of Blue Earth, Minn. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, February 23, 1933)
