He lived here until the spring of 1921 when he moved to Chokio, Stephens County, Minn. There he remained for 8 years, when he moved back again to his farm in the Swan Lake township. It was there that Mr. Berven at the age of 66 years, 5 months and 4 days old, on last Sunday afternoon, December 11th, 1932, passed away. His health began to fail him about one and a half years ago and especially towards the last weeks. His death was attributed to cancer of the bladder.

Mr. Berven was affiliated with the Lutheran Church in Illinois when he lived there. He was also, at one time, a member of the Danish Lutheran church near Ringsted and during the time he lived near Choklo he belonged to the Lutheran Church at that place.

While he lived in Illinois in 1888, he married Ingeborg Knutson. Their union was blessed with seven children: Kaerney of Sidney, Montana; George, the second child, died in Minnesota, some over a year ago; Clarence and Edmund are living in Seattle, Wash.; Emma resides at Des Moines and Jacob and Elmer are staying at home.

While the family lived in Montana, Mrs. Berven passed away.

Mr. Berven was married the second time on December 29, 1906, to Marie Petersen. Six children were born during this union; two died in infancy. Evelyn and Martia are living at Chokio, Minn.; Oscar and Allan are living at home.

Mr. Jacob Berven was a kind husband and a loving father. He expressed repeatedly that he was ready to leave this world and move onto the next one, trusting only in the redemption of Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour.

The funeral was held on last Wednesday, December 14, with L. E. Sinba of Armstrong in charge. A brief devotion was conducted at the home at 1 P.M. by Rev. Peder Nordsletton of Wallingford. At 2 o’clock, the service began at the Immanuel Lutheran church south of Gruver. The choir sang very fittingly at the church two sons in the American language and also one in the Norwegian language. A quartette furnished the singing at the Swan Lake cemetery, where the remains of Mr. Berven was laid to rest. Besides the floral offerings, there were also gifts in the form of money to the Ebenezer Old People’s Home of Minneapolis, Minn., in memory of the late Mr. Berven.

The following served as the pallbearers: Knute Olson, Tom Olson, Herman Sorum, Anton Berven, Carl Petersen, and Art Hansen. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, December 21, 1932)
