Son Dies in Philippines
Mr. and Mrs. Orvis Kaltved, 720 N. 14th St., Estherville received a telegram shortly after noon today that their son, Richard Wayne Kaltved, 22, serving with the U.S. Navy died suddenly yesterday of undetermined causes in Olongapo, Philippine Islands.The telegram was sent from Washington, D.C. by Chief of Naval Personnel, Department of Navy. It said in part:
“Your son died while serving his country. Please accept my most heartfelt sympathy in your great loss.” The telegram had been delayed in transmission, it was noted.
Kaltved was born Dec. 3, 1939 and was graduated from Estherville High School in 1958. He would have completed three years naval service on June 15. He was a machinist’s mate, third class.
Survivors in addition to his parents include five sisters, Orvilla, Sharon, Wanda, Nancy and Marcia, all at home; and two brothers, Jerry and Alan.
No further information concerning his death has been received by the family and details on disposition of the body will await further word with the Navy Department. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 24, 1962)
Receive Word Son Died of Heart Attack
Mr. and Mrs. Orvis Kaltved received word today from the United States naval Department that the cause of death of their son, Richard, has been determined as a coronary heart attack. Mr. and Mrs. Kaltved had received a telegram Thursday notifying them of Richard’s death but saying at that time cause of his sudden death was undetermined. Today’s message said that the body is being flown to the United States but as yet Mr. and Mrs. have had no word as to time of arrival.Richard was serving in the Philippines at the time of his death.
