Estherville – Memorial services for Ethel B. Johnson, 97, of Estherville will be held on Jan. 15. She died on Dec. 9 at her home in Estherville.She was born on Oct. 8, 1902 the daughter of Peter and Ola (Sanders) Minor.
She graduated from high school in Perry and continued her education at the University of Iowa’s school of nursing and received her registered nursing degree in 1927.
On Nov. 11, 1930 she was united in marriage to Ernest Johnson of Estherville. She was a lead teacher of nurses at the Coleman Clinic in Estherville and retired in the 1930’s until she was needed as an obstetrical nurse at Holy Family Hospital during World War II. From 1954-1970, she worked as the school nurse for the Estherville Community Schools.
She served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross blood bank, a member of the local nursing association and was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville.
She is survived by three sons, Merle Johnson and wife Carol of Estherville, Donald Johnson and wife Mariel of Estherville and Richard Skoge and wife Harriet of Omaha, Neb.; one sister-in-law, Phyllis Minor of Estherville; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and her dedicated caregivers, Barb Hoffmeyer, Agnes Prust , Ann Wallace and Etta Martin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; her parents; four brothers and three foster sons. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 13, 1999)
