Herbert Lyman Howard 75, longtime resident of Emmet county, died at 5 am Sunday [May 22, 1960) at the Holy Family Hospital. Mr. Howard had first suffered a heart attack in 1942 and been in poor health for the past few years. Mr. Howard was born June 5, 1886 at Janesville, WI, the son of Harvey and Angeline(Waldo) Howard. He received his education in the Lennox, SD area with his parents when he was two years old. He was married to Alice Folken at Lennox, SD February 9, 1910, and after moving to Emmet County in 1928 he farmed in the Gruver area for many years. He and his wife retired from farming in 1948 and moved into Estherville.

Survivors include his wife, Alice; four sons, Harold Howard, William Howard, Emerson Howard and Donald all of Estherville, and a daughter Alice Howard who is living at home. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, four sisters, one daughter and one son.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm Wednesday at 1st Presbyterian Church in Estherville. Burial will be in East Side Cemetery Estherville, IA. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May, 1960)
