Grace Higinbotham
Estherville – Mrs. Charles (Grace) Higinbotham, 96, Estherville, died early Wednesday morning at the Good Samaritan Center here.

Services for Mrs. Higinbotham will be 3 p.m. Friday at the Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville, with the Rev. Neal Armstrong, Gruver, officiating. Interment will be in East Side Cemetery.

Born April 4, 1880 in Salem, Kansas, the daughter of Lester and Sara Lawrence, her life story is closely connected with the development of Emmet County. The Lawrences moved to Armstrong in 1892, after living for a time in Hazelton and Grundy Center, and were the fourth family to settle there.

After receiving her education in Armstrong schools, Grace Lawrence married Charles Higinbotham at Armstrong, and the couple moved to the yet-unbuilt town of Gruver in 1899. The Higinbothams purchased a grocery store in Gruver in 1901. Following her husband’s death in 1940, Mrs. Higinbotham continued to operate the store until 1950, when she moved to Estherville, where she had made her home since. She is a member of Gruver Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Higginbotham is survived by two sons, William Higinbotham, Estherville, and Lawrence Higinbotham, Brookings, S.D.; two grandchildren, Dean Higinbotham, Corpus Christi, Tex., and Mrs. Harold (Janet) Hart, Chandler, Minn.; four great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Fuhrman Funeral Home, Estherville, is in charge of arrangements, where friends may call until time of services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 10, 1977)
