LOCATION: Estherville, IowaAlta Carrie (Petersen) Hartman the daughter of Warren and Sena (Nielsen) Petersen was born July 28, 1917 in Estherville, Iowa and departed this life on Monday, February 9, 2009 at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa at the age of 91.
Alta received her education in Estherville schools, graduating in 1936. She then taught in country schools north of the Estherville Airport.
On March 15, 1939 she was united in marriage to James Hartman in Rutland, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple farmed east of Estherville. Alta enjoyed sewing, hunting, fishing and sharing pickles and sweets. The couple also enjoyed time spent at their lake cabin in Canada. James died on November 27, 1994.
Alta was a member of United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and was active in the country circle and rug group. She also belonged to the East Riverside Club.
Left to cherish Alta's memory is her daughter, Marilyn Schnell and her husband, Darvin of Estherville; son-in-law, Dr. James B. Summitt of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, J.B. Summitt and his wife, Minna Lee and their son, William of Brooklyn, New York; Carrie Summitt of San Antonio; Londa Israel and her husband, Mark and their children, Dylan and Seth of Lawrence, Kansas; Darci Borlin and her husband, Chris and their children, Derek and Jeremy of Stevensville, Michigan; Tara Pyawasit and her husband, Chet and their children, Alysha, McKenna and Landon of Estherville; sister, Alice Hartman of Estherville and sister-in-law, Rosemary Hartman of Estherville. She has been preceded in death by her husband, James; daughter, Joanne Summitt; brother, Leonard Petersen and her parents.
