Alvina Mae Campbell, the daughter of John T. and Anna (Blossy) Campbell, was born December 22, 1918, in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. She died Wednesday, June 22, 2005, at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 86 years and six months.
She received her education in the Gruver, Iowa schools.
On January 25, 1937, Alvina was united in marriage to George Grems in Rockford, Illinois. The couple made their home in the Gruver area where they raised their family. Alvina did local house cleaning for many local families in the area for years. In her leisure time she loved to crochet, make quilts and doilies. She donated quilt blocks every year for the church bazaar. A highlight in Alvina's life was quilting the Gruver Centennial Quilt. At the time of the centennial she was the longest living resident of Gruver. George died February 23, 1971.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Gruver where she belonged to Gruver Presbyterian Women and also the afternoon circle.
Left to cherish Alvina's memory are her five children, Janice Grems of Gruver; Barbara Fisher and her husband, Don of Estherville; Wayne Grems and his wife, Beverly of Waukee, Iowa; Dennis Grems and his wife, Eileen of Gruver; Deloris Duncomb and her husband, Bob of Sun City, Arizona; twelve grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Virginia Clark of Estherville; two sisters-in-law, Miriam Campbell of Mesa, Arizona; and Vera Origer and her husband, Vernon of Estherville.
Preceding Alvina in death were her husband; two sons, Frank and Lawrence; parents; brother, Robert Campbell; and sister, Minnie Harvey.
