Mayor Groves’ Mother Dead
Mother of Mack J. and Geo. Groves Died Thursday After a Long Illness of Paralysis
The aged mother of Mack J. Groves and Geo. Groves of this city, passed away on last Thursday evening at the home of the former in this city, after an illness that had totally disabled her for the past two years. On December 3rd, 1909, the deceased suffered a severe attack of paralysis, which confined her to her bed. During these many years she has gradually declined in health until the end came to relieve her sufferings at the age of almost 90 years.Clarissa L. Marquess Groves was born in Grand county, Virginia, on the twenty-seventh day of January, 1826, where she resided until 1859. She was united in marriage to George S. Groves in 1850 and the family moved to Iowa in the year 1867, and settled in Richland township, Adair county. There were eleven children born to this union, nine of whom are still living: J.Z. Groves of Winterset; Mrs. Jennie Monaghan, of Silom Springs, Ark.; Chas. L. Groves of Bakersfield, Cal.; B.F. Groves of Los Angeles, Cal.; O.M. Groves, of Kansas City, Mo.; Mack J., George and Mrs. Francis Buck, of this city.
The remains were taken to Greenfield, Iowa, Saturday, for burial beside those of the husband who died in 1876, and a daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Mack J. Groves, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Groves, Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Buck, and H.C. Brees accompanied the remains and the part was joined at Des Moines by the son J.Z. Groves and his family and a niece. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, November 3, 1915)

Remains Taken to Greenfield, Iowa, For Burial by the Side of Her Husband
After years of suffering, Mrs. Clarissa L. Groves died at the home of her son, Mayor M.J. Groves, of this city Friday night, October 29th. She was nearly ninety years of age and has lived in Iowa since 1867, a pioneer of the state forty-eight years and been a resident of this county for about twelve years, most of the time making her home with her son, Mayor Groves.She was a noble woman; a loving wife; a devoted mother; considerate and kind to all with whom she came in contact. She was God fearing and a Christian. What more can be said?
Obituary
Clarissa L. Marquess was born in Grand County, Virginia, January 27, 1826, and lived there until 1859. She was united in marriage in 1850 to George S. Groves. In 1859 the family moved to Ohio, coming to Iowa in 1867 when they settled in Richland township in Adair Co. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Groves all of whom attained to man and womanhood and nine of whom are still living. They are J.Z. Groves of Winterset, Mrs. Jennie Monaghan of Silom Springs, Ark., Chas. L. Groves of Bakersfield, California, B.F. Groves of Los Angeles, California, O.M. Groves of Kansas City, Missouri, Mack, George and Mrs. Francis W. Buck of this city.On December 3, 1909, the deceased suffered a stroke of paralysis which has since kept her confined to her bed. During the long years that she has been bedfast her faculties have gradually left her; during the first two years she was able to read and converse but since then her senses of speech, hearing and sight have gradually left and during the last eighteen months she has been not only helpless but totally deprived of her faculties.
The remains were taken to Greenfield, Iowa, Saturday for burial beside her husband, who died in 1876, and a daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Mack J. Groves, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Groves, Mr. and Mrs. A.W.
