Andrew M. [Malcolm] Brown Pioneer Resident Dies at Gruver
Another outstanding pioneer, Andrew M. Brown of Gruver, passed away at this home at two o’clock on Sunday [April 18, 1948] afternoon. He had been in failing health for a long time but was confined to his home since the first of the year and has been bedfast for over two months. He was not able to recognize any of his family for two or three days before his death.Mr. Brown was born March 10, 1866 at Aurora, Ill. He came to Emmet County in 1900 [per birthdates of children, about 1898] and became a resident of Center township where he resided on a farm. He was always interested in civic matters. He took part in politics when he was younger and was an influence in the community.
He retired from activity on the farm and moved into Gruver in about 1930. He made a host of friends while on the farm and was well known over the county.
He is survived by his wife [Gertrude E. McQueen], two sons and six daughters: Harvey of Ruthven, Wallace of Gruver, Mrs. Harry Wratten, Estherville, Mrs. Roy Pennington, Plainfield, Ill., Mrs. Birdie Steele, Estherville, Mrs. George Vavra, Chicago, Mrs. Willis Wertz, Gruver and Mrs. D. L. Whally, Chicago. There are also 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the Gruver Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Henry C. McMican officiating. Interment was in the East Side Cemetery in this city. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, April 22, 1948)
