Estherville – Funeral services for John Bartels, 81, of Estherville, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Wiegman officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery, Estherville with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville. He died on Tuesday, January 21 at Rosewood Manor Care Center in Estherville.Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 23 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
He was born on March 29, 1915 in Westgate, the son of Erwin and Lydia (Seehase) Bartels. He attended parochial school near Westgate through the 8th grade. He then attended Wartburg Academy in Waverly through the 12th grade. He also attended Wartburg College for two years. After college he installed electrical wiring on farms in the Sumner area. He later was a salesman for farm implement dealers in Sumner and Readlyn. He was united in marriage to Esther M. Minkel on June 11, 1936 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sumner. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he began working for ITT as a sales engineer. He retired in 1978 after 23 years of service with ITT.
The couple has lived in Estherville since 1960. The couple was voted the Outstanding Estherville Sports Boosters in 1989. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Elks Lodge and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Esther of Estherville; one son, Allan Bartels of Flippin, Ark.; one daughter, Mrs. Tom (Vicki) Schultz of White Bear Lake, Minn.; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one brother, Clarence Bartels of Denver, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by one son, his parents, three brothers and one sister. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 22, 1997)
