Clark – In this township, December 15th 1876 [s/b January 15, 1876], John Clark, aged 27 years.
The deceased had for years past suffered from a spinal curvature, which finally caused his death. (Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, IA, January 20, 1876)

Comrade Bemis received from the war department last week, a headstone for the grave of John H. Clark, a private in Co. I, 23nd Iowa, that is buried in our cemetery. There is now but one soldier's grave unmarked in the county so far as known, and an application is on file for a headstone for that, and all has been done through the painstaking care of Mr. Bemis.
