Estherville – Funeral services for Laura L. [Luella] Cassem, 78, of Estherville will be held at 2 p.m. on Tues., Apirl 29 at the United Methodist Church in Estherville with the Rev. Larry Willey officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery, Estherville. She died on Fri., April 25 at Holy Family Health Services in Estherville.Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Mon., April 28 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
She was born on Dec. 5, 1918 in Ledyard, the daughter of Eugene and Helen (Powell) Worden. She received her education in the Elmore, Minn. schools, and graduated from Elmore High School in 1936. She was united in marriage to Edwin Cassem on Nov. 18, 1939 at the Armstrong United Methodist Parsonage in Armstrong. The couple spent most of their married life in the Estherville area. In 1961, they moved to Illinois where she was employed by Romeoville School District as a cook. In 1981, she and her husband retired and moved back to Estherville. Mr. Cassem died on Aug. 14, 1986.
She has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Apartments for the past several years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville and the United Methodist Women. She donated her time to read to the third grade at McKinley Elementary School.
She is survived by sons, Roger Cassem of Estherville, Duane Cassem of Lincoln, Nebr.; Dennis Cassem of Plainfield, Ill.; Michael Cassem of Joliet; daughters, Karen Rosenberg of Fairmont, Minn.; Mrs. Chris (Hazelle) Svoboda of Romeoville, Ill., Mrs. Donald (Mary) Taylor of Halls, Tenn.; Mrs. Roger (Rochelle) Jones of Memphis, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Worden of Truman, Minn.; and two sisters, Mrs. Art (Lavina) Johnson of Sandwich, Ill.; and Mrs. Harold (Nelda) Loge of Blue Earth, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one sister and two brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 28, 1997)
