Estherville – Funeral services for Carl Ahrens, 81, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 16 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Glenn Bohmer officiating. Interment will be held at East Side Cemetery, Estherville with military graveside rites by the VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville. He died on Wednesday, November 13 at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.

He was born on June 15, 1915 in Estherville, the son of Edward and Maria (Mohr) Ahrens. He received his education in the rural country schools in Emmet County. He was united in marriage to Vera Koehler on February 3, 1946, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Ceylon, Minn. In 1947, the couple moved to their present farm northwest of Estherville. He continued to farm and raise livestock until his illness this past summer.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Estherville where he has served on every board and office in the church.

He served in the United States Army from March of 1941, until the war’s end. He served in the Observation Corp and served in the European Theater. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 3388 and the American Legion Post 91 in Estherville.

He is survived by his wife: Vera of Estherville; two sons, Duane of Little Canada, Minn.; Darlo of Estherville; three daughters, Mrs. Steven (Eileen) McNeil of De Graff, Minn.; Mrs. Mike (Helen) Blum of Bloomington, Minn.; Mrs. Robert (Audrey) Peyton of Graettinger; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; two sister, Marie Tirevold of Sherburn, Minn.; Pauline Ahrens of Sherburn and one brother, Ed Ahrens of Estherville.

He was preceded in death by one son, one sister, one brother and his parents. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 15, 1996)
