Henry Gustav Wellendorf, son of Claus Wellendorf and his wife, Catherine nee Stuhr, was born in Wendorf, Holstein, Germany, on the 8th day of August 1869. Being baptized in the Lutheran church in his infancy, he later was confirmed in the same church in his home village.

In the 1884 as a young lad of 15 years he emigrated to the United States of America, coming at first to Clinton County, Iowa. Later he moved to Emmet county where he worked for the railroad for some time. However, preferring the quiet life in the country, he together with his brother rented a farm north of Estherville where they lived for about five years. Mr. Wellendorf then purchased a farm on the edge of Raleigh and lived there until about 1914 when he retired from the farm and came to live in Estherville. Mr. Wellendorf was never married, but was the sixth child of a family of four brothers and three sisters all of whom he survived.

Up to a few years ago he was in good health and enjoyed the blessing that the Lord had given him as a result of his labor. However, overtaken by persistent ailment he gradually became weaker in his body and knowing that his end was not far off, he settled his personal affairs and concerned himself more about his eternal home which Jesus had prepared for him in Heaven. To this home he was taken early Monday morning, March 2, 1942, by a quiet and peaceful death, thus arriving at the age of 72 years, 6 months and 24 days.

Surviving him are the following nephews and nieces: Henry, Hobert and Edward Wellendorf, Mrs. Helen Beck, Mrs. Ida Carty, Mrs. Clara Peters and Mrs. Margaret Hays, all of Preston, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Beck of Ames, Iowa; John and August Schroeder of Spragueville, Iowa; Emil and Henry Weise and Mrs. Anna Johnson of Elbow Lake, Minn., Mrs. Lena Stevens of St. Charles, Minn., Henry and Peter Wellendorf of Clint, Iowa, Mrs. Bertha Duncan of Everglades, Florida, and Mrs. Emma Messlinger of Belfield, North Dakota. Two nephews and one niece preceded him in death. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, March 5, 1942)
