Services for Steven D. [Duane] Custer, 25, Estherville, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Estherville, with the Rev. Max Goldman officiating. Interment will be in East Side cemetery.
Mr. Custer was reported dead on arrival Saturday [May 12, 1979] at Rochester Hospitals following a tree cutting accident on the farm of his brother-in-law, David Lair.
Friends may call at Henry and Olson Funeral Home, Estherville, until noon Tuesday and at the church prior to services.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Custer, he was born Feb 22, 1954 at Estherville. He received his education in Estherville schools, attended Iowa Lakes Community College for three years and a university at Stevens Point, Wisc., for one semester.
He was married to Leah Hess on June 1, 1974, at Estherville. Mr. Custer lived his entire life in the Estherville area, having been employed by the Iowa conservation commission during the summers and by his brother-in-law at the time of his death.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ducks Unlimited and Izaak Walton League, where he served as president in 1978.
Mr. Custer is survived by wife, Leah, Estherville; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dallas Custer, Estherville; two sisters, Mrs. David (Sheryl) Lair and Sandy Custer, both of Estherville; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Harold Dallmann, Estherville; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Custer, Cumberland.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, May 14, 1979)
