Engolf L. Torkelson Was Born in Norway
Engolf Leonard Torkelson was born Feb. 4, 1889 in Stavanger Norway to Mr. and Mrs. Torkel Olson. He grew to young manhood there and came as a young man to the United States. He returned to Norway for a visit and married Bertha Marie Peterson on Oct. 28, 1907. They came to America a few years later and made their home south of Ringsted. Mrs. Torkelson died in 1939.After a lingering illness Mr. Torkelson died at the Origer-Tracy Rest Home in Estherville, Aug. 22. He was 69.
Funeral services were held Aug. 25 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. George Pallesen officiating. Burial was in the DePew Cemetery. Music at the services was furnished by Mrs. Arthur Voetmann, Clare Skattebo and Norman Wilberg. Pallbearers were John, Vern, Tom and Leonard Torkelson, Earl Long and Ralph Schumacher.
Mr. Torkelson is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Earl (Elsie) Long of Ringsted, Mrs. Ralph (Airs) Schumacher of Whittemore, three sons, John of Chicago, Ill.; Thomas of Ringsted and Leonard of Ringsted; one sister, Mrs. Anna Tastad of Everett, Wash., three brothers, Ingvald, Thomas and Randolph, all of Norway. Two brothers preceded him in death. He has 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Out-of-town relatives and friends attending the funeral were Mr. Ole Peterson of Fenton, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Schumacher and family of Whittemore, Mrs. Ed Solberg of Fairmont, M. and Mrs. Bernard Solberg, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Solberg of Cylinder, Mr. Oscar Solberg, Armstrong, Mr. and Mrs. John Torkelson and Mary of Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Long, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Taylor of Estherville, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Long of Superior, Mr. and Mrs. James Long, Martin Oleson, Mrs. William Mitchell all of Armstrong.
