Paul Viland is slowing traveling towards the grave he is a victim of that fell disease, consumption. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, October 5, 1888)

Paul, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Viland, of Ellsworth township, died of consumption Monday [November 29, 1888] evening. He was an estimable young man highly esteemed by all. A trip to Montana was taken with Charley Bartlett last year, with the hope that an out of door campaign, would break the force of the disease which had fastened upon him, but all to no purpose. (Northern Vindicator, Estherville, IA, November 2, 1888)
