Estherville – Services for Richard (Dick) Simon Shonkwiler, 82, of Estherville will be held Thursday, at 1:30 p.m. at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville. Burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Home in Estherville. He died Saturday, January 26, at the Holy Family Hospital.He was born Aug. 16, 1908 in Hartley, the son of Simon and Lilleth (Combs) Shonkwiler. He was educated in Spencer and Estherville schools. He married Gertrude Marie Osborne on Aug. 8, 1956 in Huntington Beach, California. He farmed in the Estherville and Terril area until entering the service during WWII. After the war, he lived in California where he worked as a crop duster and carpenter. He moved back to Estherville in October of 1990. He served in North Africa, Italy and France with the army during WWII.
He is survived by his wife, four brothers, Oliver Shonkwiler, Estherville; Roger Shonkwiler, Estherville; Lincoln Shonkwiler, Hamilton, Montana; and Douglas Shonkwiler, Deerfield Beach, Florida. Two sisters: Mrs. Ruth Willey, Ames; and Mrs. Anna Evans, Newport Beach, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 28, 1991)
