John Henry Scharfenberg 1882-1948

H. Scharfenberg Rites Today at Christian Church
Another oldtime resident, J. Henry Scharfenberg, a railway man, passed away Monday [May 17, 1948] night at Holy Family hospital. He had been failing health for some time past. He was well known in the city having come here when he was but a year old. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Scharfenberg came to Estherville in 1888.

Henry attended the local schools and entered the railway service as did many other young men at the age of about 20. After 44 years of service with the Rock Island he retired from service.

Henry was a member of the Elks, the Masonic Lodge and the Brotherhood of Railway conductors.

He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. G.T. Tostenson, Mrs. Ethel Athey, of this city, Mrs. Otto Otterson of Waitsburg, Wash. and Mrs. H.R. Ober of Portland, Wash.

The funeral services were held today from the Church of Christ. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 20, 1948)
