Estherville – Services for Mrs. Fred (Alice Helen) Sawyer, 92, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at First Christian Church with Dr. Robert A. Kunz officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill cemetery. She died Monday, Aug. 7, 1989 at Holy Family Hospital.Friends may call at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home from 3-9 p.m. Friday.
She was born February 24, 1897 at Urbana, Iowa, the daughter of A.W. and Nellie (DeVol) Fisher, as a young child moved with her family to Walker. She was a graduate of Walker High School and Coe College, Cedar Rapids. After college she taught eight years at Troy Mills, Walker and Ladysmith, Wis. ON June 13, 1922 she was united in marriage with Fred Sawyer at Ladysmith. Following marriage they lived in Ladysmith until 1928 when they moved to Hollandale, Minn., 1931 to Bondurant and to Estherville in 1935. She taught school in Superior two years. In 194 they moved to Bloomfield, Indianapolis, Ind. later to Des Moines, returning to Estherville in 1966.
She was a member of First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ; VFW Auxiliary; American Legion Auxiliary, White Shrine and P.E.O.
Survivors include one son Willard, Elk Grove, Calif.; three daughters; Mrs. Duff (Hilda) Weede, Bloomfield; Mrs. John (Virginia) McCurdy, Grand Island, Neb. and Mrs. Robert (Helen) Gray, Estherville; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister Mrs. Marian Ellwood, Ladysmith, Wis.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one daughter; four brothers and three sisters. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, August 9, 1989)
