Mrs. Emily S. Peterson died September 23rd at the home of her son, H. W. Peterson, of High Lake township, after an illness extending over a number of weeks. The deceased underwent an operation at the City hospital from which she never rallied. After spending three weeks in the hospital it was thought best to take her home. Her nurse, Margaret H. O’Connar, accompanied her. Later Dr. M. C. Porter, a specialist from Colfax, was called. He decided she was too weak to undergo another operation and gave no hope for her recovery. All that loving hearts and willing hands could do was done but in spite of all efforts she continued to suffer intense pain until the evening of September 23rd when she passed into the Great Beyond where sorrows and pain is no more.

Emily S. Ristrine [Ristrim] was born July, 1855, in Boston, Mass. When quite young she moved to Dubuque with her parents, where early childhood was spent. The family later removed to Stratford where she resided until her marriage to James Peterson, which occurred December23, 1875. Their married life began on a farm near Grand Junction where two children were born to bless their union. Mr. Peterson died October 13, 1880. Mrs. Peterson and children continued to reside on the farm for 21 years enduring all the hardships and privations of pioneer life. Later the farm was sold and the family moved to Ogden, where they resided two years. The past five years the deceased spent at the home of her son in Emmet county She united with Methodist church in Dubuque when a child. Later she joined the Baptist church at Grand Junction. She bore her suffering with a Christian spirit and passed away attesting her faith in her savior. She left one son, H. W. of High Lake and a daughter, Mrs. Lillie Elby, of Gruver, seven grandchildren and three brothers and three sisters, all were at her bedside. Frank Rihsin [Ristrim], of Des Moines; Charles and Alford, of Stratford; Mrs. Jennie Chapman, Mrs. Matilda Peterson of Stratford, and Mrs. J. P. The Wallingford quartet furnished the music. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery near Estherville.
